The newly renovated NH Collection Copenhagen Hotel is clad with GRC from BB fiberbeton
NH Collection Hotel nominated for Award

The Danish Renoverprisen 2022 is celebrating the 10th anniversary by extraordinarily awarding three renovation projects the prestigious prize in three categories “buildings we live in, work in, and experience in.” 144 renovation projects were nominated for the award and following the jury’s first assessment 21 project have been named as favourites for the coveted award.

One of the 21 projects is the renovation of the iconic building, known for decades as the “Desert Fortress”, now housing the 5-star hotel NH Collection Copenhagen.

A general focus throughout the renovation process has been to preserve the original architectural expression, while also updating the building to meet modern technical requirements and building standards.

To preserve the original architecture, the look of the facade regarding proportions, material look, colour, and surface was to remain the same. GRC was chosen for the facade cladding as the material has the formability and versatility to uphold the wish for this certain surface and facade expression.

Furthermore, the GRC facade elements are produced as lightweight thin shells which has made room for further insulation, which ensures energy savings and contributed to the DGNB Gold certification.

In late June the jury will choose the 9 projects and it is from these that the three winners will be found.

A visit and production tour for students
Factory tour

Constructing architect students from KEA visited our production in Denmark to learn about GRC and the many possibilities that the material affords.

The visit included a tour of the production process and showing them the craftsmanship of manufacturing GRC.

The tour gives visitors the opportunity to ask questions and see how the GRC elements are manufactured from moulding to finish.

Large facade elements for renovation of housing estate in Albertslund
Our largest project to date - Galgebakken

Galgebakken is a housing estate in Albertslund, Denmark with around 600 homes, originally built in 1972-1974. The residential area was a result of an architecture competition and designed to encourage an inclusive social environment that almost functions as a small town itself.

The renovation of the housing estate has long been discussed and the plans for the extensive project has been underway for a decade.

BB fiberbeton is manufacturing GRC elements for the facade cladding and with more than 35.000 m2 of GRC spread over 7.000 elements, the renovation is BB fiberbeton’s largest project to date.

It has been decided to preserve the original architectural expression, so the lighter and thinner GRC elements have been designed to look like the original concrete facade. The GRC facade is coloured brown with large aggregates clearly visible in the surface. The elements will be mounted with embedded steel frames.

The renovation commenced in January 2022 and the extensive renovation is estimated to finish in 2025.
